Demodex is NOT a cause of acne.
There is no single cause for acne. Instead, we rely on a five-factor model to understand its development.
CAUSES OF ACNE:
- Hyperkeratosis – Abnormal keratinization of the follicle (a skin condition where the cells in the outer layer of the skin multiply too quickly and fail to shed properly).
- Seborrhea – Changes in the composition of sebum.
☝️ Sebaceous gland activity alone is NOT the cause of acne (meaning oily skin on its own doesn’t cause acne!).
- Hormones – For this, you need the help of an endocrinologist and gynecologist-endocrinologist.
- Bacteria and microorganisms – A blood test (such as the Osipov method) can provide insight. I was shocked when I saw that the number of good bacteria in my body was significantly below the norm 🥲.
- Immune inflammatory response – Stress can also be part of the hormonal and immune response, which affects acne. However, it is not an independent cause of acne. Psychosomatic factors can trigger an immune response disruption.
If you have two or more of these factors, you are a “lucky” owner of acne. Retinol, acids, tea tree oil, and niacinamide won’t provide a 100% solution. Not because they don’t work, but because you also need internal correction!
❗️Genetics do not directly cause acne.
Dairy products (including cream) – These can increase insulin production and growth factors, which activate androgen receptors. While a healthy diet is essential, it will not solve acne entirely.
An excess of omega-6 fatty acids combined with a lack of omega-3 can trigger pro-inflammatory processes and worsen acne. This is why many acne treatment protocols recommend supplementing with omega-3.
